Afterward, stickers and a small toy from the treasure chest reward young patients for their bravery.

Pediatric Dentistry Services

Sealants are a safe, painless, and low-cost way to help protect your child’s back teeth from decay. Pediatric sealants have been used for more than 20 years. A thin, plastic, tooth-colored or clear coating is bonded to the chewing surfaces of the molars and premolars. This sealant keeps food and bacteria from getting into the tiny grooves in the teeth and causing decay.

Children’s back teeth are where most decay occurs because the bristles of a toothbrush have trouble getting into the grooves to remove trapped food and bacteria.

Sealants provide protection for many years if properly cared for, so they outlast baby teeth and can protect adult molars during the time that they’re most prone to cavities.

Fluoride Treatment

Treating children’s teeth with fluoride helps keep their tooth enamel strong and fortified against decay. Alongside daily brushing, fluoride protects their teeth from the acid of plaque bacteria and can even reverse some tooth decay.

Fluoride treatment is a regular part of pediatric dental cleanings. They are administered as a simple gel or foam. Learn more about fluoride treatment for both children and adults.

Deep cavities in children’s molars may cause inflammation of the tooth’s pulp tissue. A pulpotomy is commonly used to stop the infection while also saving the tooth.

During this treatment, the decay is first removed. Then the top of the tooth’s pulp chamber is opened and the tooth pulp is removed (this is similar to an adult patient having a root canal). The chamber is then sealed to prevent further damage. This procedure has a high chance of success in saving a baby tooth that has experienced severe decay.

Cavities or decay in children’s teeth may be large enough to require a crown to be placed. Our dentists understand the special materials and techniques required for pediatric crowns.
