If you’re thinking about getting dental implants, one of your biggest questions is probably, “How long is this going to take?”
The answer is different for every patient. Some people are ready for implant placement right away, while others need extractions, bone grafting, or additional healing first. From your first consultation to your final tooth, the entire dental implant process can take several months, but much of that time is simply allowing your mouth to heal.
Here’s what the dental implant timeline typically looks like.
Step 1: Dental Implant Consultation
Typical timeline: One appointment
Everything starts with a consultation. Your dentist will examine your teeth and gums, review your medical history, and use dental imaging to evaluate the health and amount of bone available for an implant.
This is also when you’ll discuss what you’re hoping to accomplish. Are you replacing one missing tooth? Several teeth? Or are you considering full-arch dental implants?
Once your dentist understands your needs, you’ll receive a personalized treatment plan and a better idea of your individual timeline.
Step 2: Preparing Your Mouth for an Implant
Typical timeline: Varies by patient
Some patients can move directly to implant placement. Others need a little preparation first.
If you still have a damaged or infected tooth, it may need to be extracted. If you’ve been missing a tooth for a while, you may also have experienced bone loss in that area.
In these cases, bone grafting may be recommended to create a stronger foundation for the implant. Depending on the procedure, the graft may need several months to heal before implant placement.
This preparation can make the process longer, but it’s an important part of creating the best possible environment for long-term implant success.
Step 3: Dental Implant Placement
Typical timeline: One appointment
Once your mouth is ready, the implant is surgically placed into the jawbone.
The implant is a small post, usually made from titanium, that acts like the root of your replacement tooth. The procedure itself is typically completed during a single appointment.
If the idea of implant surgery makes you nervous, sedation dentistry may help make the experience more comfortable. Sedation options can be especially helpful for patients with dental anxiety or those having multiple procedures completed during the same appointment.
Step 4: Healing and Osseointegration
Typical timeline: About 3–6 months
This is usually the longest part of the dental implant timeline—but it’s also the part where you don’t have to do much.
During healing, your jawbone gradually grows around and bonds with the implant. This process is called osseointegration.
Osseointegration is what gives dental implants their strength and stability. Instead of simply sitting on top of the gums, the implant becomes securely anchored within the jaw.
Your dentist will monitor your healing before moving forward with the permanent restoration.
Step 5: Abutment and Final Restoration
Once your implant has successfully integrated with your jawbone, it’s time to complete your new tooth.
An abutment connects the implant to the visible restoration. Your dentist then creates a crown designed to match the shape, size, and appearance of your surrounding teeth.
Once the final crown is attached, your dental implant should look and function much like a natural tooth.
How Long Does the Entire Dental Implant Process Take?
For many patients, the complete process takes approximately 3–9 months. However, your timeline may be shorter or longer depending on:
- Whether you need a tooth extraction
- Whether bone grafting is necessary
- How quickly you heal
- How many implants you’re receiving
- Your overall oral and medical health
- The type of restoration being placed
While several months may sound like a long time, remember that most of that period is healing—not sitting in the dental chair.
