What to Do in a Dental Emergency

While waiting to see a dentist, follow these steps to protect your teeth and manage pain:

1. Toothache or Swelling

  • Rinse with warm salt water to reduce bacteria.
  • Take over-the-counter pain medication (avoid aspirin if bleeding is present).
  • Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling.

2. Knocked-Out Tooth

  • Pick up the tooth by the crown (top), not the root.
  • Rinse gently with water (do not scrub).
  • Try to place the tooth back in the socket or store it in milk.
  • See a dentist immediately—the sooner, the better for chances of reattachment.

3. Chipped or Broken Tooth

  • Save any broken pieces.
  • Rinse your mouth with warm water.
  • Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling.
  • Avoid chewing on the affected tooth until treated.

4. Lost Filling or Crown

  • If possible, place sugar-free gum or dental cement over the exposed tooth.
  • Keep the crown safe and bring it with you to your appointment.
  • Avoid chewing on that side of your mouth.

5. Abscess or Infection

  • Rinse with warm salt water.
  • Do not pop or drain the abscess yourself.
  • Seek immediate dental care to prevent more serious complications.
